************* It’s Twistathon 2018! ******************

Two stores are partnering together again this year to create our own event instead of joining the official Spinzilla. Threadbender Yarn Shop (TYS) and Michigan Fibre Studio (MFS) are coming together for Twistathon!

What is Twistathon?
Twistathon is an event where individuals compete in a friendly challenge to celebrate the art of spinning, while also raising money for a local charity! Twistathon is held October 1-7, 2018. This is a no pressure event, so you can either get competitive or just spin for the joy of spinning. We just want to have fun. But there are prizes…

Details:
Since October is breast cancer awareness month, we decided to connect with a local organization that does amazing things…and they also have a knitting group! It’s Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids! (All of the registration fee will go to the charity.) However, you do not have to be local to participate. We have created a special facebook group called “Twistathon” that you can join after you register. You can post pictures, yardage, fun facts, helpful hints, or any other spinning related fluff you can think of.

We will have a special trunk show set up from 9/25 – 10/6 showcasing a variety of local and indie talent!

Cost (payable to either TYS or MFS):
$15 registration fee per person if paid by cash or check
OR
$16 registration fee per person if paid online, through PayPal, or with a credit card
TYS and MFS will combine all registration fees and donate $15 per registered person to Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids. There is no benefit to paying your registration to one store over another. The $15 per person will be pooled and donated to Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids in the name of “Twistathon 2018”. There is no limit to the number of participants. In fact, the more, the better!

Check our website to register!

Schedule:
Although the competition lasts only a week, we have a lot planned for you.

Fri, Sep 28 (5p-9p) – fiber prep at MFS – drum and hand carders will be there for you to get your fiber spin ready. We are open until midnight!
Fri-Sat, Sep 28-29 – dyeing classes at TYS – dye up raw wool to spin the colors you have dyed yourself (up to 4 sessions available)!
Mon, Oct 1 (12:01a) – Twistathon begins – no in-store events
Tue, Oct 2 (5p-9p) – open spinning at MFS
Wed, Oct 3 (5p-9p) – open spinning at TYS
Thu, Oct 4 (5p-9p) – open spinning at MFS
Fri, Oct 5 (5p-9p) – open spinning at TYS
Sat, Oct 6 (10a-4p) – open spinning at MFS
Sun, Oct 7 (12p-4p) – open spinning at TYS
Sun, Oct 7 (11:59p) – STOP spinning…you are done!

We will require final yardage to be submitted by Fri, Oct 12 at 5p so we can tally our results and announce winners. You can submit via email to either store or through our facebook group. If you need help counting your yardage, let us know. We will have more information about this in the group, including how to count your plied yarn. Please note, all plies counted must have been spun during Twistathon 2018.

Prizes:
The top two yardage producers will each win a $25 gift certificate to both stores.
We also have many prizes donated by generous vendors that we will post pictures of in the group. As a registered participant, every time you come to one of the listed events above, you will receive an entry into our prize drawing. So, if you come to all the events, you will have 11 chances to win! For the out-of-towners, we will have a special drawing for you based on the facebook group participation. For every quality post from Sep 28-Oct 7, you will receive one entry. And by “quality post”, I mean something related to this event and your participation in it. If you don’t have a facebook page, now is the time to get one. 😉

Please note: if you are bringing fleece or fiber to spin for this event that have been purchased elsewhere, we only require that it has been thoroughly cleaned first.

Both stores will have special hours for October 1-7 only. Please see below:

A Little About Honey Girl Farms

Shannah Harding’s dying passion started at a young age. Always enthralled with color and the beauty it brings, 4 year old Shannah dyed her mother’s white couch with food coloring. The rest was history, as they say! Her play and study of color took many different forms, including baking, cosmetology, and art & design. And her fiber craft, inspired by her grandmother and other gifted fiber artists, also took many paths. After learning the basics of crochet from her mother, Shannah taught herself what ever else she needed to know. And like so many of us, crocheting lead to knitting, which lead to felting and spinning. As she progressed, her yarn choices matured into wools and wool blends. It was only a matter of time before her love of color and her love of wool collided into the gorgeousness of Honey Girl Farms!
